Welcome

Welcome to the website for the National Survey of Assessments and Accommodations for Students who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing! Thank you so very much for helping us out. Your participation is the only way we can continue to develop a national perspective on how students who are deaf or hard of hearing participate in state assessments.

Purpose of our Project

The purpose of this study is to provide a national perspective on the use of assessments and accommodations for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. These students are enrolled in a wide range of settings, from schools for the deaf to special district programs to regular education classrooms. Each of these settings has unique characteristics that encourage fair and appropriate education for our students.

We are currently developing the Fifth Annual Survey for launch in the Spring of 2009. We are shifting to a focus on how to apply what we have learned in the last four years from you, our participants. Many of you have emphasized the need for special consideration of student characteristics when making testing decisions for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. Some of the questions we will pursue in the Fifth Annual Survey include:

  • What kinds of accommodations did students who are deaf or hard of hearing use on 2007-08 statewide standardized assessments in math, reading, and science?
  • What role does language proficiency in English and American Sign Language play in how students participate in statewide assessments?
  • What student, classroom, and test characteristics affect how students use accommodations or alternate assessments for accountability testing?

Who's Eligible

For the Fifth Annual Survey we invite all K-12 educational professionals who work with students who are deaf or hard of hearing to participate. We would love to hear from teachers who work at the same school or in the same program. We are surveying professionals who directly serve students who are deaf or hard of hearing across a wide range of educational settings: from schools for the deaf to teachers who are in regular education. We hope to hear from regular education teachers, special education teachers, teachers of the deaf, school psychologists, and assessment coordinators. We will have a special section of the survey that will provide an opportunity to try out a new accommodations evaluation tool, especially designed to incorporate important student characteristics into the decision-making process.

Thank you so very much! If you have questions about your eligibility, contact the Principal Investigator, Dr. Stephanie W. Cawthon, at stephanie.cawthon@mail.utexas.edu
